Obituary

Mary Arden Burgan passed away, peacefully, surrounded by family on the morning of Wednesday June 21, 2023.

Mary was born April 2, 1944 in Norton, VA and lived in Big Stone Gap, VA with her parents throughout her childhood. She also met her soulmate, Tommy Burgan in Virginia. They took their first leap of faith and moved from Virginia to Indianapolis to start the adventure of their lives where they were married on November 28, 1962.

This new chapter in their lives meant starting a family and they knew they needed a better school system to raise their daughters in. Tom and Mary then took another leap of faith when they moved from Speedway to Lizton to their dream house. The rest of the family thought they were nuts to move to the “sticks”, but this fixer-upper grew to be a loving household for children, cousins, nieces and nephews, friends and eventually grandkids to gather in love and kinship.

Mary retired from Anthem in 1998 after 28 years of service. She then decided she was not ready to fully retire and then worked another 12 years at Walmart in Brownsburg.

Mary was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. From softball games, marching band shows, library trips, sleepovers, and multiple hour-long phone calls she was there for everyone! She will be missed by family and friends, alike. Her laughter, light-heartedness, and kindness brought so much light into this world.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Rachel Blackburn; her husband, Tom Burgan; and son-in-law, Brian Shelton. Remaining family members are Joanna and Lance Kennedy, Kim, Alex, and Kyle Shelton.

Graveside Services will be held at 11 am, July 1, 2023 in the Lizton K of P Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to Hendricks County Senior Services.
