Susan Virginia Kerr, 90, passed away peacefully on January 13th, 2026, in Carmel, IN.
She was born in Sacramento, CA on March 29, 1935, and raised in NE Portland, OR. Susan met the love of her life, Hugh T. Kerr, at Oregon State University.
Susan and Hugh married in Jackson Hole, WY in 1955, and shared a devoted marriage for over 65 years, preceding Hugh’s death on July 13, 2020. Together, they loved traveling and giving their life in service as Hugh became Brigadier General of the United States Marine Corps.
Throughout his military career, Susan was a steadfast and loving partner, embracing the role of a military wife with strength, loyalty, and grace. She supported Hugh, their family, and their community with unwavering dedication. In her professional life, she worked for many years as a dental hygienist, a role that reflected her gentle nature and care for others.
A woman of deep faith, Susan was dedicated to the church and sang in the choir. She has now joined her family in Heaven. Susan was a sweet and devoted mother to all of her children and was known to have a positive outlook. She found her greatest joy at home, particularly in the kitchen, where love was expressed through food. To know Susan was to know her cooking: her baked goods, her meals, and the generosity with which she nourished those around her.
Susan was preceded in death by two of her children, Daniel Kerr and Linda Kerr. She is survived by her children, Jim Kerr (wife Suzanne Kerr) and John Kerr (partner Debbie Everhart). She is also survived by four grandchildren: Matthew Kerr (wife Alise Kerr), and their sons Daniel Kerr and Owen Kerr; Timothy Kerr (wife Ranelle Kerr), and their children Jeremy Kerr and Amelia Kerr; Dana Schlegel (husband Reagan Schlegel), and their daughters Charlotte Schlegel and Lillian Schlegel; and Mia Kerr (partner Gurjot Sandhu).
Details for a memorial service to be held at Arlington National Cemetery will be announced at a later date.
Arrangements are entrusted to Eric MD Bell Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Hendricks County.
All are encouraged to keep Susan’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time of loss.
