Richard A. Patterson
November 8, 1933 – April 30, 2025
Richard Patterson, a beloved longtime resident of Pittsboro, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025, at the age of 91. Born in Logansport, Indiana, on November 8, 1933, Richard was the son of Gilbert and Sarah Agnes Edna Patterson, who preceded him in death.
In 1962, Richard made Pittsboro his home, building a house as an engagement gift for his beloved wife, Hilda Patterson. Their loving partnership was the foundation of a rich and meaningful life together until her passing.
Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Europe where he applied his talents to mapmaking. Following his military service, he worked as a model maker at Naval Avionics in Indianapolis, where he remained through many transitions, including its evolutions into the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, Hughes, and ultimately Raytheon.
Beyond his professional and military service, Richard was a man of deep connections and vibrant community life. He was a faithful member of the Pittsboro Baptist Church, the Boone County Airport Association—where he enjoyed flying his Piper J-3 Cub with friends—as well as a proud member of the Knights of Pythias and a dedicated Mason. He loved gathering with friends for Friday night fish frys in Wanamaker and took great joy in visiting with his many dear friends over the years.
He was deeply engaged in civic life, and as an active Republican, Richard believed strongly in public service and patriotic values. He was also proud of his heritage as a direct descendant of Richard Stockton, the first signer of the U.S. Constitution from New Jersey—a lineage that underscored his lifelong respect for history, democracy, and American ideals.
Richard is survived by his loving children: Lucy Montgomery (Larry), Hilda "Tuty" Cooley (Gar), and Pedro Justiniano Sr. He also leaves behind a proud legacy of several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Richard’s warmth, sense of adventure, and devotion to family and friends will be remembered by all who knew him.
Friends and family will gather for visitation at Eric M.D. Bell Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 11 am to 1 pm, with the funeral service beginning at 1 pm. He will be inurned at the Lizton K of P Cemetery, at a later date.
All are encouraged to share thoughts, prayers, and memories with Ricard's family on his memorial page found on the funeral home's website, www.ericmdbellfuneralhome.com .
