Matthew Paul Goldsmith of North Salem, Indiana, passed away September 8, 2025. “Uncle Paul”, as he was affectionately known by his nieces and nephews, was enjoyed for his matter-of-fact humor and kindness. Memories of Paul arriving with an armful of gifts on Christmas morning were an example of his selfless nature and love for his family. Paul was an accomplished woodworker and a skilled autobody painter. The Tri-West High School Marching Band semi-trailer was painted by him in the late 1990s, a gift of his time and skill. Beyond helping others outside the home, Paul was a dedicated husband to his wife of many decades, Carol, who preceded him in death. He was fond of german shepherds and gave many dogs a good home over the years. Paul grew up in West Virginia, and after serving in the United States Navy, moved to Indiana. Paul was a gifted communicator and a joy to talk to. He told stories of his time at sea, the rain showers that were welcomed by the sailors and the dolphins that swam alongside the ships in water that glowed at night with bioluminescent life. He was a voracious reader of westerns and a secret whiz at math, the fastest at the slide ruler, a student who took calculus in only the 9th grade. Paul will be greatly missed by his family and friends.Paul will be inurned with military honors at Crown Hill Cemetery with a private ceremony.
Arrangements are entrusted to Eric M.D. Bell Funeral Home. All are encouraged to keep Paul’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
