Upon hearing of his passing, we were all in disbelief. How could someone so good be taken so suddenly, without reason, or explanation. It wasn’t just tragic; it’s unfair, unjust, and unbearable to think of. Joseph Eugene Strong was more than just a good man. He was kind, caring, loving, generous, and supportive. He was a son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandson, cousin, nephew and friend to everyone who had the good fortune to know him. Family meant everything to him and if you were his friend, you were family. He was a great judge of character, would lend a hand without question if you really needed it and wasn’t afraid to call anyone out on their bullshit. You could never find a friend more loyal than him.
Born January 9th, 1984, Joseph was the middle son and third child of Allen Strong and Laura Keithley. As a child he loved running around Van Bibber Lake with his siblings and friends while swimming in the lake, riding his bike, playing ball, or just hanging out. Regardless of what he was doing, you rarely saw him without a smile on his face. He had a way with finding the good in everything and everyone.
Joseph graduated from North Putnam High School 2002 and attended IU for a year before completing his college education online through the University of Phoenix. He began working as a maintenance technician for Allison Transmission before working his way up to his current position as Assistant Chief Powerhouse Engineer. And when he worked on Saturdays, he could often be found spending his lunch breaks enjoying a rootbeer float at the Mug-n-Bun with is dad.
His favorite things to do were riding his bike, spending quality time with his family, and hanging out with friends. He could often be found hosting one get together or another, going to concerts, or enjoying good food and drinks with his family and friends. When he was little, all he wanted to be was a Batman when he grew up. When he grew up, all he wanted to be was the best dad possible, and at that he excelled. He enjoyed helping his son Landon in the Young Marines and was heavily involved with both his sons Landon and Jamison in the Indiana XC Racing Circuit. Racing dirt bikes became an event for the whole family to participate in and enjoy. He spent a lot of time with his daughter Haven and some of that time included watching her dance in front of the television to anything with music. Regularly being a host and father for his daughter Summer and her friends whom seemed to be surrogate children to him and his wife. He had a beautiful family and life with his wife Nichole, whom he loved more than I can even describe in words. His eyes shone with such an enormous amount of love when he would look in her direction. The love he had for her and his family was awe inspiring and the stuff true love and romance is made of.
Joseph loved riding his motorcycle and often talked about riding it one day to Sturgis with either his brother Charles or his wife Nicole if not both. He died doing what he loved, riding his motorcycle to work. On August 12, 2019, while riding his motorcycle, he was hit by a truck and died at the scene. He was 35 years old.
Joseph was an amazing person both inside and out with a heart larger than most people can imagine. We are going to miss his huge smile, warm heart and incredible sense of humor. He was taken from us far too soon and will be sorely missed by anyone who ever knew him.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert Keithley, Elenore Keithley, and Pauline Strong White and his son Jonathan Joseph Strong. He is survived by his wife Nicole Strong; his children Summer Buchanan, Landon Buchanan, Jamison Strong and Haven Strong; his parents Allen Strong and Laura Keithley; his siblings Holly Strong Holliday, James Strong, Charles Strong; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Patty and Walt Ingram; and brother-in-law, Chris Ingram.
