The following is a life story written by Mrs. Elizabeth Mendenhall’s loving family.
Mrs. Elizabeth Anne Mendenhall, age 94 of Brownsburg, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, May 19, 2024.
She was born October 6, 1929, in Rockville, IN to Enos Akers and Ethelyn Akers (Bowen).
She's survived by her Granddaughters, Elizabeth (Mark) Francis (Mendenhall) and Jennifer (Jeff) Stinson (Mendenhall); her Great-Granddaughter, Brooklyn M. Stinson; her brother, Ralph (Judy) Akers; her brother-in-law, James Joachim; her brother-in-law, Melvin Mendenhall; her sister-in-law, Loretta Botkin (Mendenhall); and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Robert Cyrus Mendenhall; her son, Charles William Mendenhall; her father, Enos Akers; her mother, Ethelyn Akers (Bowen); her sisters, Martha, Ruth, and Rachel; and her brothers, Raymond and Charles.
She was always very good with her hands. She worked at Western Electric before her son Charles was born. She stayed in the home with him. She handmade all his cakes for his birthdays, some as fancy as a circus train car with many individual cakes. When they built their home in 1962, she handmade the light switch covers for their home. She also made several cutting boards for the family. She loved lighthouses and hummingbirds and had a very large collection of salt & pepper shakers.
She was in a hiking club with her sister, Rachel. They would hike around 20 miles on the weekends with their group.
She loved arranging flowers and spent many years working at Marsh as a florist. She loved to bring home flowers that were not in good enough shape to be sold and would doctor them back to health in her home. Her table always had two or three glasses with flowers in them.
She loved to make peanut butter fudge and we all loved to eat it; the rule was that you always had to finish the row, so it was even. She made chocolate mints that were loved at graduations and wedding anniversaries. Her chicken and noodles and her pies (sugar cream and pecan) were always a crowd favorite at family reunions.
